This’ll only feel weird the first couple times, I promise.
For our second week of the 50 Film Challenge, we’re heading to 1930s Berlin and into the mind of a serial killer in Fritz Lang’s first flick with sound, M.
You’ve possibly already seen Lang’s other masterpiece, Metropolis, but it is M which he considers his magnum opus. Both a portrait of a serial killer as well as a criticism of a negligent society, M is considered a timeless classic for its many cinematic innovations, including the use of smooth, extended tracking shots and a leitmotif.*
M has inspired pretty much all modern crime thrillers and has gone down in history as one of the greatest films of all time.
I’ll be screening this on either Thursday or Friday eve this week (I’m in PST). If you’re interested in joining a virtual co-watch on one of those nights, comment below with your preference! You can also watch on your own w/ a Criterion membership ($11/month).
Look out for a discussion thread at the end of the week to share what you thought of the movie!
